Escape Lodge Development
Statement on Light Impact at Night
The Potential Effects of Artificial Lighting on The Development Site
Regarding potential light pollution from the Escape Lodge site, due to the long daylight hours this issue arises primarily from late September - mid April.
Construction phase.
Temporary lighting will be installed for use in dull / overcast conditions or
for early evenings. These lights can be shaded to reduce pollution, nuisance or distraction when visible off-site. They will only be lit during the hours of operation and will be switched off at night. No flood lighting of the site will be employed.
Operational Phase
A primary requirement for the location for Escape Lodge is the lack of street lighting and the corresponding dark night skies. This provides ideal conditions for observation of the sky at night, is an attractive feature for the Escape Lodge target market and one which the project must preserve as a valuable commercial resource.
The eco-lodge windows will be fitted with curtains and/or shutters or blinds which will have the multiple purposes of insulating the building, improving the interior appearance and blocking light emissions to the night landscape. Velux roof windows will be fitted with blinds for the same purposes. A very small number of low level outside lights will be provided to facilitate movement between the house and the car park and this can be low-wattage (100watts or less) bulbs, suitably and accurately shaded to control spill and direct light only where it is required.
The Township service building will be treated in the same manner and here it is particularly important to limit night-time light as the project aims to recreate a sense of going back in time. The thatched houses will have very minimal interior light and curtains or shutters will be fitted on the few small windows. Guests will move around the site at night by means of personal torches as they would in a campsite. Where paths must be marked, very low-light emitting solar-powered lights set close to ground level will suffice by aiding natural night vision yet not causing pollution.
